Grand Rapids Symphony Designer’s Showhouse 1993 - Brookby Estate Library

Concept: A traditional and stately, yet updated library for a grand residence
Location: East Grand Rapids, Michigan
Interior Design: Ronnie Frey, Frey Design
Photography: Baker Furniture
Project Description:

This was my very first designer's showhouse project and the room that launched my design career. It was a unique design opportunity which involved renovation of a historically prominent estate. While creativity was a must, the program demanded designing within a strict set of guidelines to preserve the history of the home.

This elegant, wood paneled library, with its intricate carvings and detail, presented a design challenge: a small room with large proportions, tall ceiling and inefective lighting. The room was transformed to emphasize its grand scale and while giving birth to a space that felt comfortable, easy to live in and accommodated entertaining.  Color, texture and carefully chosen accessories, were elemental to this design, providing balance to the symmetrical architecture of the room.

The historic character of this classic interior was juxtaposed with unexpected, modern lighting, hi-tech audio/video equipment and modern artwork. The combination of these various elements ushered this room of heritage right into the nineties.
